Governor's 2010 Budget Recommendations
The Executive Budget Recommendation was made on 2.12.09 before a joint meeting of the House and Senate Appropriations Committees. Given the current state of the Michigan and U.S. economies, as well as Michigan’s structural deficit, the Governor’s recommendation makes extensive changes in the form of cuts, suggested policy reforms, and federal stimulus funds to present a balanced budget proposal. Briefly, the budget proposal is balanced as follows:
- A 3% cut to university funding
- Closure of the State Police Crime Lab in Marquette
- Combining Cooperative Extension and Agricultural Experiment Station
- Eliminating the Department of History, Arts & Libraries
- $106 million in cuts to the Department of Community Health
- $164 million in cuts to K-12 spending,
- Elimination of 1,500 state government employees
- Close of the Department of Corrections Deerfield, Scott, and Camp Branch facilities.
- An assumed $500 million in federal stimulus, in the form of adjusted Medicaid match rates.
